Consistency is Boring. Do It Anyway

Have you ever caught yourself at work — somewhere around mid-Tuesday, probably — thinking: this is so boring?
Same time in. Same time out. Same route, same traffic, the same low-level internal muttering when the bus pulls away just as you reach the stop. You clock in. You do your tasks. You clock out. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a quiet voice asks: is this really it?
Here's the unsexy truth — genuinely unsexy, the kind nobody puts on a motivational poster — regardless of what you do, there will always be parts of your work that stay exactly the same. Repetitive, predictable, unremarkable parts. Some people call it consistency. Others call it commitment. A few don't call it anything at all, because it's so quietly woven into who they are that naming it feels unnecessary.
But here's what's worth pausing on: you still show up.
Nobody throws a party for that. Nobody pulls you aside to say, well done for clocking in again today. But showing up — reliably, without drama, without needing a standing ovation to function — is saying something real about you. It says you're responsible. That you can be counted on. That when you say something will be done, it gets done.
Think about brushing your teeth. Menial, isn't it? Utterly predictable. Twice a day, every day, presumably for the rest of your life. No one praises you for it, and yet the health of your teeth and gums depends almost entirely on that quiet, boring, unremarkable habit. Neglect it long enough and the consequences show up — usually at the worst possible moment, in the most inconvenient way.
Work is no different.
Processing payroll every month isn't exciting. Filing taxes, updating records, sending the weekly report that nobody seems to read — none of it has the thrill of a big pitch or a company announcement. But people need to be paid. Deadlines need to be met. The quiet machinery of any organisation runs on tasks that carry no glory. And the person who handles those tasks reliably, without complaint and without ceremony — that person gets noticed. Not always loudly. But noticed, in the way that actually matters when opportunities arise.
Because consistency is, at its core, a form of integrity. What you do when the task is dull, the recognition is absent, and no one is particularly watching — that tells people far more about you than any highlight reel ever could. It's what makes you trustworthy. It's what makes you the person someone thinks of when something genuinely important needs to be done well.
That's not a small thing. That's how careers are built.
